Contrary to popular belief, learning how to speak a new language does not have to take a long time. The truth is, you can have a great time learning a new language! Focus on the opportunities that speaking another language can bring. When you travel, it can make you much more at ease. Not only that, but you may find you can talk to more people right where you live. Having another language also expands your employment opportunities. The language that is used the most in the United States, next to English, is Spanish.
Many people living in America today do not even speak English; many of these people are Spanish speaking. This means that if you are a translator of Spanish today, you have an ability that is often needed.
There is probably no better way to become fluent in a new language than to go somewhere that forces you to speak it constantly. If you were trying to learn Spanish, for example, you would visit somewhere in which Spanish was the primary language. In some large cities in America, there would be no need to leave home to find such a Spanish-speaking area. Usually what this means, however, is traveling to another country so that you are not able to simply switch back to your own language when it is convenient. The immersion system is one that many experts insist is the fastest and most effective way to learn. Of course, this way of learning a language can also be somewhat stressful. It's up to you whether or not this is the way you'd like to learn.
As you listen to Spanish, pay close attention to what is being spoken. This will improve your 'hearing' for it. A lot of languages tend to be more 'oral' than written. Good listening skills are still very important if the language is still a living language. Knowing how to correctly write a sentence or the alphabet will produce limited results. Naturally, you'll want to be able to understand other people when they speak to you. You'll get the best results by hearing the spoken language as much as possible. You will know you're on the right track when you can identify your language after hearing a few spoken words.
And remember that practice makes perfect. Be sure to always talk in your language as often as you can, and don't be concerned about how it looks, or sounds. It will help you a lot if you substitute your native language with the words you do know in your new language. For example, if you are learning Spanish try using "cena" instead of "dinner" or "uno" for "one." By using the words often they'll become second nature to you. You'll know and understand the new words when you hear them used. You'll be amazed at your ability to understand your new language when you hear it spoken.
Learning a language does not have to be difficult. Remember, Spanish is not as hard to learn as many other languages, so it's a good one to start learning. There are lots of ways to go about learning a new language. You don't have to try something that doesn't feel right to you; figure out which system seems best for you. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. If your goal is to speak Spanish fluently, just keep at it and don't be impatient, and you will gradually get there!
